The History of Groundhog Day: How Did it Start?

History of Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is a tradition that dates back several years, and it happens every February. However, this got us thinking: How did it start? That’s why we’ve created a post on the history of Groundhog Day. Hopefully it’ll answer any questions you might have about the holiday, too.

The Beginning

Groundhog Day was officially founded in 1887 in Punxsutawney, PA, according to the History Channel. Many people are familiar with the holiday’s traditions because of the Bill Murray comedy of the same name. However, there is more to the holiday than you might think. It actually has its roots in the Christian tradition of Candlemas Day. This is a centuries-old holiday that involves the burning of candles to see how long winter will last. The Germanic peoples of middle Europe expanded the tradition using hedgehogs to determine the weather—a strange substitution for which there is little explanation.

For those familiar with the state of Pennsylvania, where Groundhog Day was founded, you’ll probably recognize that the area was settled by many Germans. In fact, the term Pennsylvania Dutch is actually a corruption of the word for German, Deutsch, one reason the area has the name. In short, the Germans who settled in Pennsylvania carried on the tradition in the States using groundhogs.

Although many question the accuracy of the predictions, it’s still a fun way to celebrate the changing seasons. We can’t wait to see if this year’s prediction holds true!

Three Ways To Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Ways to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. DayOur country has seen a lot of extraordinary individuals who dramatically changed the cultural landscape for the better. These people went to extraordinary lengths to organize and inspire other like-minded people. One of whom we honor on the 20th of January. Here are three ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

# 1 – Take a road trip to Atlanta. In Atlanta, you can visit the birth home of Martin Luther King, Jr., where he gained the experiences, both good and bad, that ultimately motivated him to become the influential civil rights leader for which he is celebrated. Take a stroll in the peaceful “I Have A Dream” World Peace Rose Garden and contemplate King’s difficulties and triumphs as he helped to achieve equal rights for all.

# 2 – Watch “Selma” as a family. This is a great way to become more intimate with King’s narrative. It’s also a great activity for children. The film depicts the struggles that King went through even after he won the Nobel Peace Prize, including the famous march he led on Selma, Alabama to help secure voting rights for blacks.

# 3 – Use Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a time to get more involved. Take King’s incredible achievements as inspiration to get involved in issues that you care about. Whether it’s continuing the fight for equal rights or taking better care of the environment, do it with commitment and passion, just like King did.

Best Places to Spend Thanksgiving

ThanksgivingThanksgiving is a time to spend with your family, but this doesn’t mean you have to stay at your house for your traditional dinner. If you don’t want to spend Thanksgiving day in the kitchen rather than enjoying your family time, then venture out and enjoy the holiday somewhere new. Here are some of the best places to spend Thanksgiving.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee: During the fall, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, turns into an autumn haven. Known as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, this destination is the perfect place for those that love fall foliage and family-friendly fun. There is the Great Smoky Thanksgiving Arts & Crafts Show on Thanksgiving weekend from November 22-27, which means you can get a head start on holiday gifts, too.

New Orleans, Louisiana: If you are looking to escape to somewhere warmer—that also has a party atmosphere—look no further than New Orleans, Louisiana. As you might expect from the Big Easy, Thanksgiving is just an excuse for the city to enjoy delicious Creole-inspired cuisine. This city was even the birthplace of a modern Turkey Day tradition—the turducken, which is a chicken stuffed into a duck, stuffed into a turkey. Enjoy Thanksgiving in a non-traditional way in this great Southern city.

Plymouth, Massachusetts: The first-ever Thanksgiving happened in Plymouth, Massachusetts, so there’s no better place to enjoy the long Thanksgiving weekend. At Plymouth Plantation, you can explore live exhibits, including a 17th-century English village. This destination even has its own Thanksgiving feast, complete with a roast turkey and plenty of traditional New England trimmings.

Johnny O’Connell Comes Away with Cadillac Racing Win at Laguna Seca

CadillacCadillac is known for its luxury, but it is quickly becoming the go-to name in the performance field, too. Earlier this month, this was shown when Johnny O’Connell outdid himself during the Pirelli World Challenge Championship GT race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, bringing in a Cadillac Racing win.

O’Connell is a four-time Pirelli World Challenge Championship (PWC) GT champion and battled for the first-place position with Porsche driver Patrick Long. He started out from the pole during the October 10th race, and led the race throughout its duration, though Long did put the pressure on at some points.

For instance, Long tried to pass O’Connell on the outside of turn four after a Lap 27 restart. Luckily for Cadillac Racing, O’Connell didn’t let him, causing Long’s Porsche 911 to go off track and into the gravel.

After Long was no longer in commission, O’Connell then had to fend off Alvaro Parente in his McLaren 650S. With his veteran racing experience, Cadillac’s racer was able to hold off Parente and crossed the finish line first. His Cadillac Racing teammate, Michael Cooper, followed behind Parente in third place.

This Cadillac Racing win allowed the team to finish second in the team championship, coming in after the K-Pax McLaren team.

The Benefits of Tire Rotations: Proper Tire Maintenance

Cadillac CTS TireThere are a number of important services you can have performed on your vehicle in order to properly maintain performance and extend its life. One of the basic automotive services is a tire rotation. This quick and easy service is more important than you might think, as it contributes to better handling, fuel economy, and safety. Read on to learn the benefits of tire rotations.

According to Pep Boys, a tire rotation is designed to maintain even wear on all four tires. Because your car is typically heavier near the engine, the tires nearest to the powertrain wear faster. Wear can also be affected by alignment or the drivetrain setup (e.g., front-wheel drive vs. rear-wheel drive). Tire rotations prolong the life of the tires and they lead to a comfortable and smoother ride.

How do you know if you need a tire rotation? There are some basic signs to keep in mind. First, look for uneven wear. For example, if you notice that the front tires have less tread than the rear tires, it may be time for a rotation. Also, listen for tire noise and vibrations, as these can be a sign of uneven wear patterns.

How often is a tire rotation needed? The basic rule of thumb is to rotate the tires every time you get an oil change—every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. A tire rotation will lead to a smooth ride, even grip, and it can even extend the life of your tires. Be sure to ask for a rotation the next time you bring your car to a shop.
